Founded in 2001 and renamed in 2016, the Department of Informatics, formerly Department of Information Systems, is housed within NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing. To maximize synergy in education and research, in September 2016, the original Information Technology Program moved into the new Department of Informatics. Currently, there are two Divisions within the Department of Informatics: Division of Information Systems and Division of Information Technology.
We pride ourselves in a very strong emphasis on applying technical skills to current problems and emerging opportunities in our degree programs and research. In the Division of Information Systems, we offer degree program that study the design, use and evaluation of interconnected human, technological and organizational systems. In the Division of Information Technology, we offer degree programs that address the integration, design, deployment, and management of computing and networking resources and services, as well as the development of technology infrastructures in organizations. Many of our undergraduate degrees are ABET accredited, reflecting the quality of our academic programs.
As with other high quality degree programs, we thrive because of our talented faculty. Our faculty have received teaching awards, have industry experience, and conduct leading-edge research together with students at all levels. Faculty have received highly competitive grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Health (NIH), Department of Energy (DoE) and Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), won best paper awards, written books, and published extensively in very selective journals and conferences with very low acceptance rates. We are accomplished in data/text/web mining, location-aware social applications, user experience research, multimedia, smart health, and medical informatics, just to name a few areas. Our faculty actively involve students in their research; many students subsequently join research groups and study advanced degrees.
Top quality education and high impact research are an integral part of our mission as a public research university. We are excited about and dedicated to our role in educating future professionals for New Jersey, the nation and globally, and collaborating with students and faculty across campus and beyond.
On behalf of our students, staff and faculty, I invite you to explore our web site and join us any way you can: taking a class, studying in a minor or a degree program, collaborating on research, or just providing feedback on how we can improve and meet your needs. We look forward to engaging with you.
